Ask The Doc

Ask the Doc

Dr. Pierre-Paul Tellier answers questions submitted by our readers.

Q: I have a hair loss problem. Where should I go for an examination?

-Nina W., Brock University

A: Nina,
When people have medical problems, they want to know how to deal with them quickly and efficiently. Hair loss can be unsettling, and perhaps you’re concerned about your physical appearance as well.

The first step is to see your primary care provider - either at your school’s health service or in the community. But you may wonder, “That person is not a specialist, so how can he or she know what to do?” In fact, your provider may know exactly what the problem is and therefore treat it, or will order tests to help figure it out.

The causes of hair loss (alopecia, in medical language) are varied, and yours may be due to a disorder related to dermatology or endocrinology, among other possibilities. It can even be a symptom of stress and other emotional health concerns.

Once your primary care provider has assessed your symptoms and your overall health, he or she may refer you to a specialist. This process ensures that you see the right kind of doctor for your condition and that you can be treated expeditiously.
